Register and Qualify National Defense Academy (NDA) Entrance Exam for Air Force Officer   
  • To become an AIR FORCE OFFICER, the candidate has to register and modify National Defense Academy (NDA) examination.
  • National Defense Academy (NDA) examination is conducted twice yearly by the Union Public Service Commission in March and October.
  • The candidate should be between 16½ to 19½ years of age on the first day of the month the course starts. 
  • The candidate should be only an unmarried (male and female) Indian citizen.
  • The entry through NDA is for the Flying branch, Ground Duty (technical), and Ground duty (non-technical).

Qualify SSB Interview and Medical Test (NDA)   
  • After Qualify the NDA written exam, the candidate should go for the SSB Interview that starts with a screening test. The Selection Board recommends candidates who clear the SSB Interview. They are then selected for detailed Physical and Medical examinations. In the case of Air Force candidates, a medical examination is the most challenging. Therefore, the air Force demands more, in terms of physical and medical requirements, compared to other Armed Forces wings.
  • Candidates who clear the medical examination part will be featured in the merit list.
  • The merit list is based on the marks scored by candidates in NDA written, SSB Interviews, and Medical examinations. The final selection of training candidates will be based on this merit list and the vacancy for the Air Force Officer at NDA.

Go for the Training (NDA)   
  • After final selection, selected candidates will undergo three years of training at the National Defense Academy (NDA), Khadakwasla, Pune. This is followed by 1-year training at Air Force Academy, Hyderabad. After finishing both pieces of training, successful candidates will be inducted into the Indian Air Force Officers.
  • All cadets of the Flying branch and Ground Duty (technical) would be offered B. Tech in NDA.
  • Cadets on Ground duty (non-technical) would be offered a B.Sc. degree.

  • CDSE examination is conducted twice yearly by the UPSC Cell in May and December.
  • The candidate should be between 20 and 24 years of age on the first day of the month the course starts. 
  • The candidate should be only an unmarried male Indian citizen.
  • The entry through CDSE is for the Flying branch only.

After final selection, selected candidates will initially attend the training at Air Force Academy, Dundigal, and several others. A candidate will undergo training for 24 months in the Air force Academy. Starting six months of the training would be basic military training; after that, the training would be on the Flying branch. The training duration would be only 24 months, and after the training, a candidate will be posted as Flying Officer in their respective department.

    • To become an AIR FORCE OFFICER the candidate has to register and modify Air Force Common Admission Test (AFCAT).
    • The Air Force Common Admission Test examination is conducted twice yearly by the Indian Air Force/DISHA Cell in June and December.

  • Types of Commission: Two types of commissions are offered by the Indian Air Force to the eligible candidates after qualifying all the stages of the selection process AFCAT.
  • Permanent Commission (PC)-The candidates recruited in the Permanent Commission (PC) are eligible to serve as an officer of the IAF till their age of superannuation, which varies as per the branch and rank attained by the officer.
  • Short Service Commission (SSC)-The tenure of service for officers recruited in the Short Service Commission (SSC) is 14 years for the Flying Branch and ten years for Ground Duty. Ground duty officers' duty can be extended by four years depending on various factors and requirements such as availability, merit, willingness, etc.

Go for the Training (AFCAT)   

After final selection, selected candidates will go for training with the Indian Air Force as part of their onboarding process. All candidates will have to report to the training venue positively. The training duration for candidates selected in technical and non-technical branches differ and is provided as follows:

  • AFCAT Ground Duty selection process for Technical, and Flying branches, includes a 74-week training at Air Force Academy, Dundigal (Hyderabad)
  • For Ground Duty (Non-technical) Branch, candidates will have to undergo training for 52 weeks at Air Force Academy, Dundigal (Hyderabad)
