Who is an RTO Officer?

     The RTO is a region's Licensing, Registration, and Taxation Authority. The Regional Transport Officer (RTO), also known as Regional Transport Authority (RTA), is responsible for maintaining the complete database of the vehicles and drivers for all the states of India. Every state and city in India has its own RTO (Regional Transport Office) and is responsible for carrying out all the functional activities in the Motor Vehicles Act 1988. The Regional Transport Officer is responsible for maintaining a database of drivers and a database of vehicles for various states of India. In addition, the RTO officer issues driving licenses organizes a collection of excise duty and sells personalized registrations

Job Responsibilities of an RTO Officer 

  • The primary function of an RTO Officer is to maintain the complete database of the vehicles and drivers for all the states of India.
  • RTO officer issues driving licenses, organizes a collection of vehicle excise duty, and sells personalized registrations.
  • RTO Officer Enforcing the motor vehicle rules established by the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.
  • RTO Officer also manages the permits issued to trucks, autos, taxis, etc.
  • RTO officer Inspecting the vehicle insurance.
  • RTO officers charge and collect tax per the motor vehicle act provisions.
  • RTO officers also enforce road safety and bring new amendments into force with the Indian Motor Vehicle Act 1988.

Career Scope of an RTO Officer

The government of India is the only recruiter of RTO Officers in India. There is no employment in the private sector, and the job is permanent in the government sector.

  Salary/Income of an RTO Officer 

     The pay band of the RTO officers is Pay Band 3.  The average monthly income of the RTO officer at entry level is Rs. 15600/- per month, excluding the grade pay, perks, and allowances.

Register and Qualify for SPSC’s Exam conducted by various State Governments   
  • After graduation, the student can apply for government agencies or private organizations.
  • To become an RTO Officer, the candidate has to register and qualify for SPSC Exams, which are conducted by the State Governments every year once in a while.
  • State Public Service Commission (UPSC) Exam is conducted every year.
  • This exam is conducted in 2 phases:Preliminary examination and Main examination. 
  • The pre-Exam is conducted in January-February, and the main exam is in March for those students who have qualified pre-exam.
  • The candidate should be between 21 to 30 years of age on the first day of the month the course starts. However, the upper age limit will be relaxed by three years for OBC candidates and five years for SC/ST candidates.

* To Become an RTO, the candidate must apply for different state governments conducted by SPSCs.

* The state police service commission(SPSC) is based in the state. So, for example, if a  candidate lives in Haryana, their name is Haryana police service commission(HPSC). 

Qualify Interview (RTO)   
  • After Qualify the SPSC written main exam, the candidate will go for the Interview to test the personality and mental ability of the candidate, such as the candidate's brain ability, personality, leadership skills, stress handling, administration skills, decision-making skills, interpersonal skills, etc., are tested. Candidates who clear the interview part will get a chance to feature in the merit list.
  • The merit list is based on the marks scored by candidates in SPSC Written Exam and Interview.

Go for the Training (RTO)   
  • After the final selection based on the merit list, candidates will go for training, and selected candidates become RTO officers. The candidate must work in the government's RTO Officer posts.
