- National Defense Academy (NDA) examination is conducted twice yearly by the Union Public Service Commission in March and October.
- The candidate should be between 16½ to 19½ years of age on the first day of the month the course starts.
- The candidate should be only an unmarried (male and female) Indian citizen.

- After final selection, selected candidates will go for five years of training at three technical institutions, i.e., College of Military Engineering (CME), Military College of Telecommunication Engineering (MCTE), and Military College of Electronics and Mechanical Engineering (MCEME), for training.
- The first year is conducted at the Officer Training Academy (OTA), Gaya (Bihar). The training at OTA is also called Basic Military Training. After completing Basic Military Training, candidates are given four years of training in two phases, three years in Phase 1 and the remaining one year in Phase 2.
- Phase-1 Training: Phase-1 training is also known as Pre-Commission Training. This training carries out for three years. Phase-1 training is conducted at CME, Pune (Maharashtra) or MCTE, Mho (Madhya Pradesh), or MCEME, Secunderabad (Telangana).
