Who is a Database Administrator?

A database Administrator (Database Coordinator or Database Programmer) is an IT professional responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining any organization's significant database. A Database Administrator (DBA) is a specialized computer systems administrator responsible for all activities related to maintaining an organization's database and keeping data secure. A DBA's priority is maintaining data integrity, keeping it available to users, and preventing unauthorized access. DBA's responsible for understanding and managing the overall database environment. DBA also adjusts, upgrades, and tests modifications to the database as needed. This job involves resolving complex issues, so aspiring DBAs must have a passion for problem-solving. Many DBAs are general-purpose database administrators, but some specialize in tasks that can vary according to the organization they work for and its needs. Database administrators are essential in storing and maintaining the information within an organization. 

 Job Responsibilities of a Database Administrator

  • Database administrators store, organize and manage customer records and financial information.
  • Database administrators configure the database server's hardware and implement the operating system, after which the DBA installs and configures the database software.
  • DBAs primarily handle the overall integrity of a company's database.
  • DBAs are responsible for Data extraction, transformation, and loading, also known as (ETL).
  • The DBA's responsibility in a server failure or other data loss is to restore lost data to the system using existing backups.

Career Scope of a Database Administrator

      In the Private Sector: There are many career options once a candidate graduates Database System. Some of the followings are given:

  • Healthcare sector: Hospitals must record patients' medical history, bills, personal staff history, and other information. Database Administrators are getting hired in the medical industry to enhance the quality and safety of the data.
  • Transport Sector: The transport sector requires Database Administrators to analyze the data collected through passenger counting systems, asset management, location system, fare collecting, and ticketing.
  • E-commerce: The e-commerce industry is booming because Database Administrators analyze the data and create customized recommendation lists to provide excellent results to end-users.

Database Administrators can also apply for professions such as analytical delivery model analyst, senior data analyst, and lead Database Administrator in IT companies.

  • Admission into the ‘Bachelor of Technology in Computer Science course is based on the candidates’ performance in the college/university-specific examination (if specified).However, it may vary from college to college; check the particular college rules and regulations before applying.

  • After graduating and acquiring knowledge of Languages like C, C++, Java, etc., an android Application Developer can work on projects to enhance candidate skills. Candidates can also build small candidate applications to increase their knowledge base before joining some big App Development enterprises.
