Who is a Food Inspector?

A food inspector is a public health professional who ensures that meat, poultry, and other related food products processed in private plants meet safety and labeling requirements. Food inspectorsmay also inspect restaurants and supermarkets for sanitation compliance, food storage practices, and food handling compliance. A food Inspector is an official that analyses the safety and quality of food products, the ingredients used to produce the food products, the hygiene of equipment used, and the place where these products are made. Food inspectors have the authority to inspect any food organization. Food inspectors ensure that organizations follow food safety protocols and government regulations. If an organization violates food protocols, the inspector must inform a governing authority or the public about possible safety hazards

 Job Responsibilities of a Food Inspector 

  • The primary duty of the Food Inspector is to analyze the safety and quality of food products and the ingredients used to produce the food products.
  • A Food Inspector is empowered to enter and inspect any place where any article of food is manufactured or stored for sale.
  • Food inspectors have the authority to review any food organization.
  • Food Inspectors report if they detect any violations to the appropriate regulatory agency and are responsible for ensuring that food products are suitable for human consumption.
  • Food Inspectors inspect and analyze incoming food and ingredient shipments based on food safety requirements, customer, regulatory, and industry standards, and the country’s food laws.

Career Scope of a Food Inspector

  • With ever-increasing food processing units, eating hubs, and large-scale procurement of grains by government agencies, there is an ever-increasing need for Food Inspectors in India. 
  • The government is responsible for hiring food inspectors, who are recruited by both state and central agencies. For a Government job as a Food Inspector, the student can apply for the Food Inspector Exam conducted by the Central Government and State Governments occasionally.
  • Private establishments also provide excellent opportunities in this line of work. 

    Salary/Income of a Food Inspector

In Government Sector, an entry-level Food Inspector can earn approximately Rs. 5,00,000 annually. However, it can vary from state to state. In the Public sector, a Food Inspector with 1 to 4 years of experience can expect to make approximately Rs. 7,00,000 annually.

  • Admission into the Bachelor of Technology in Food Technology course is based on the candidates’ performance in the college/university-specific examination (if specified).However, it may vary from college to college; check the particular college rules and regulations before applying.

  • To become a FOOD INSPECTOR, a candidate should hold a Bachelor of Technology in Food Technology /Bachelor of Technology in Food Science/Bachelor of Engineering in Food Technology /Bachelor of Science in Food Science or B.Sc. in Food Technology.
Apply for Food Inspector Exam conducted by various State and Central Governments   
  • After graduation, the student can apply for government agencies or private organizations.
  • For a Government job as a Food Inspector, the student can occasionally apply for the Food Inspector Exam by the Central Government and State Governments.
