Who is a Forest Officer?

      Forest Officer is the professional responsible for safeguarding the forests from illegal cutting and poaching of flora and fauna of the area under his jurisdiction.Forest Officers also undertake the survey, estimation, conservation, and reporting of the forest's botanical and zoological resources. A forest officer is a designated Group B gazetted government officer of a state forest service and is the executive in charge of a forest ranger. Forest officers conserve, protect and manage forests, maintain the related revenue and expenditure and write and submit work reports. Forest Officers delegate tasks to and oversee a subordinate staff of forest guards, forest watchers, forest section officers, and forest deputy rangers. Forest officers report to and take orders from the assistant conservator of forests and the divisional forest officer.

Job Responsibilities of a Forest Officer

  • The primary responsibilities of a Forest Officer are to safeguard the forestsfrom illegal cutting and poaching of flora and fauna of the area under his jurisdiction. 
  • A Forest Officer regularly surveys forest flora, fauna, topography, and soil.
  • A Forest Officer remains alert to prevent poachers, hunters, trespassers, etc.
  • Forest officers also prevent sheep, goats, and cattle from grazing on forest land.
  • Forest officers oversee the legal and commercial exploitation of forest resources.
  • Forest officers also place informative signboards and warning boards at appropriate locations.

Career Scope of a Forest Officer

The government of India is the only recruiter of Forest officers in India. There is no employment in the private sector, and work is permanent in the government sector.

  Salary/Income of a Forest Officer

       The Government of India has fixed salary grades for Civil Servants. The national average salary for a Forest Officer is ₹3,71,700 per year. It can keep on changing with new pay commissions.

Qualify the College/University Specific Entrance Examinations for Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Mathematics or many more programs   

Admission into the Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Mathematics course is based on the candidates' performance in the college/university-specific examination (if specified). However, it may vary from college to college; check the particular college rules and regulations before applying.

  • To become a FOREST OFFICER, a candidate should hold a graduation degree in Bachelor of Science (B. Sc.) in Mathematics/Physics/ Chemistry/Botany/Zoology/Geology/Statistics/ Veterinary Science/ Animal Husbandry or a bachelor's degree in engineering/ Forestry/Agriculture or a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery(MBBS). 
  • This graduation degree will be of 3 or 4 years duration.

 

Register and Qualify Indian Forest Services (IFS) Exam   
  • To become a FOREST OFFICER, the Candidate has to register and qualify Indian Forest Services (IFS) Exam.
  • Indian Forest Services (IFS) Exam is conducted every year by the Union Public Service Commission.
  • This exam is conducted in 2 phases:Preliminary examination and Main examination. 
  • The pre-Exam is conducted in May or June, and the main exam is in October for those students who have qualified pre-exam.
  • The Candidate should be between 21 and 32 years of age on the first day of the month the course starts. The upper age limit will be relaxed by three years for OBC candidates and five years for SC/ST candidates.

Qualify Interview and Medical Test (Forest Inspector/Officer)   
  • After Qualifying the IFS written main exam, the Candidate will go for the Interview to test the personality and mental abilities of the Candidate, such as intellectual curiosity, critical thinking, observation powers, judgment ability, and mental alertness. Candidates who clear the Interview and then selected for detailed Physical and Medical examinations. The merit list will feature candidates who clear the medical examination part.
  • The merit list is based on the marks scored by candidates in IFS Written Exam, Interview, and Medical examination. The final selection of training candidates will be based on this merit list and the vacancy for the Forest Officer.

Go for the Training (Forest Inspector/Officer)   
  • After final selection, selected candidates will go for a four-month foundation course at Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration, Mussoorie.
  • After that, the Candidate will attend a 20-month Forest Service-specific orientation at the Indira Gandhi National Forest Academy, Dehradun, with one year's field training with a stipend in an assigned state.
  • This training will cover law, economy, polity, culture, fieldwork, forest and wildlife management, motor mechanics, first aid, swimming, and handling weapons.
  • After the training, successful candidates will be an awarded a master's degree in science in forestry and appointed as Forest Officers/Inspector.
