Who is an IAS Officer?

An IAS officer is an administrative post in civil services. IAS officer is responsible for supervising the administrative activities within the division assigned to them. An IAS officer is responsible for the maintenance of law and order. An IAS officer is given administrative command of an entire district as a District Collector. IAS officers also internationally represent the Government of India in bilateral and multilateral negotiations. The Indian Administrative Service (IAS) is the administrative arm of the All India Services of the Government of India. Considered India's premier central civil service, the IAS is one of the three arms of the All India Services, the Indian Police Service and the Indian Forest Service. IAS officers are also deployed to various government establishments such as constitutional bodies, staff & line agencies, auxiliary bodies, public sector unitsregulatory bodiesstatutory bodies, and autonomous bodies.

Job Responsibilities of an IAS Officer

  • An IAS officer's primary function is to maintain law and order.
  • An IAS officerplays a pivotal role in assessing the lands in a district to collect land revenue.
  • An IAS officer also directs and supervises the execution of developmental plans.
  • An IAS officer also handles government affairs, which involves drafting, framing, implementing, and reviewing policies.
  • An IAS officer is responsible for supervising the implementation of government schemes and policies.
  • An IAS officer also makes sure there is no corruption.
  • An IAS officer also manages Disaster management during natural calamities such as floods, famines, or epidemics.

Career Scope of an IAS Officer

The government of India is the only recruiter of IAS Officers in India. There is no employment in the private sector, and the job is permanent in the government sector.

Salary/Income of an IAS Officer

At the entry-level, the basic pay of IAS officers is Rs. 56,100. In addition, IAS Officers also get DA (Dearness Allowance), various types of allowances, and many services. The salary of an IAS Officer will increase as experience increases.

Register and Qualify for UPSC-CSE Preliminary and Main Exam conducted by Central Governments   
  • After graduation, the student can apply for government agencies or private organizations.
  • To become an IAS Officer, the candidate has to register and qualify for UPSC CSE Exam, which the Central Government conducts annually.
  • Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Exam is conducted every year.
  • This exam is conducted in 2 phases:Preliminary examination and Main examination. 
  • The pre-Exam is conducted in January-February, and the main exam is in March for those students who have qualified pre-exam.
  • The candidate should be between 21 to 32 years of age on the first day of the month in which the course starts. However, the upper age limit will be relaxed by three years for OBC candidates and five years for SC/ST candidates. 
  • The preliminary exam consists of multiple-choice questions from Current affairs, Indian history, and politics, and the Mains exam is a descriptive type of exam.

Qualify Interview (IAS)   
  • After Qualifying the UPSC main exam, the candidate will go for the Interview to test the personality and mental ability of the candidate, such as the candidate's brain ability, personality, leadership skills, stress handling, administration skills, decision-making skills, interpersonal skills, etc., are tested. Candidates who clear the interview part will get a chance to feature in the merit list.
  • The merit list is based on the marks scored by candidates in UPSC Written Exam and Interview. The final selection of candidates for training will be made based on this merit list.

Go for the Training (IAS)   
  • After final selection based on the merit list, selected candidates become IAS officers and will go for training at Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA), Mussoorie. It involves Bharat Darshan (a tour of India) and District training.

  • Apart from the induction training for direct recruits, LBSNAA also holds induction training for the officers promoted from the State Civil Services to the IAS officer
  • After becoming an IAS officer, the candidate has to work in the posts given by the government for a few years. After that, the candidate will get promoted to other positions.
