An orthopedic surgeon is a highly specialized physician who diagnoses and treats musculoskeletal injuries and disorders. An orthopedic Surgeon, also known as Orthopedist, is a medical practitioner specialized in diagnosing and treating the musculoskeletal problems of the human body, be it Fractures, dislocations, torn ligaments, bursitis, sprains, or any other. Besides these general diseases, Orthopedic Surgeon is also apt and responsible for treating conditions such as degenerative joint diseases, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, spinal problems, bone tumors, etc. Abnormal growth and congenital problems are other areas of Orthopedist’s specialization. In addition, orthopedic Surgeons can treat fractured and broken bones and other sports injuries of athletes using surgical and non-surgical techniques and enable them to get back on the playing field.   • Once candidates complete a master’s (MS) in Orthopedics, candidates have numerous options of either joining government hospitals or ever-increasing private hospitals. In addition, candidates can also set up care centers and work independently.
  • Orthopedic Surgeons can get employment in the surgery centers of big hospitals like AIIMS, FORTIS, and PGI. 
  • Increasing professionalism in sports has also widened the scope for Orthopedic surgeons as they can get good employment opportunities with various sports authorities for taking care of players associated with them.

Salary/Income of an Orthopedic Surgeon

The salary of an Orthopedic Surgeon largely depends upon the standard and level of the organization/Hospital candidate is associated with, especially at the starting level. The senior officials in Orthopedics have a base pay ranging from Rs. 15 lakhs to 20 lakhs per annum. On the other hand, the salary of an Orthopedic Surgeon working with a Government organization may be less. Still, Orthopedic Surgeons are suitably compensated with free accommodation, perks, and a little more respect and status than their counterparts working in private hospitals. However, there is no upper-income limit for enterprising Orthopedics who opt to open up their own clinic Care Centers.

Register and Qualify NEET( National Eligibility Entrance Exam)   
  • To get admission into the MBBS course, candidates have to register and qualify National Eligibility Entrance Exam (NEET).
  • National Eligibility Entrance Exam (NEET) exam is conducted annually by the National Testing Agency (NTA) in May/June.
  • The candidate should be of 17 years of age at the time of admission.

Enroll for MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) for General Surgeon   
  • To become a GENERAL SURGEON, the candidate should hold an MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) degree recognized by the Medical Council of India.
Go for the Internship (Doctor)   
  • After completing 4.5 years of the MBBS program, candidates must complete a one-year hospital internship in internal medicine or family practice. During internship and residency, the student is subject to be posted in multiple clinical departments on a rotatory basis to learn the necessary clinical experience in all the major disciplines. Completing the rotatory internship is a prerequisite for obtaining a medical license. Also, a Compulsory Rotatory Residential Internship (CRRI) is a necessary eligibility criterion for pursuing post-graduation studies.
  • Candidates can work under a team of top doctors during their internship. The candidates have a chance to work with patients who require different diagnoses. The candidates must gain good knowledge and skills when completing their internship.
Enroll for Postgraduate Program of MS (Master of Surgery) in Orthopedics   
  • After completion of MBBS, the candidate has to give the NEET PG entrance test for admission into a postgraduate degree, i.e., MS in Orthopedics
