Who is a Stenographer?

     A stenographer is a professional who can translate a language into a coded form, popularly known as shorthand. Stenographers use shorthand and a steno machine to transcribe information. Known as challenging, a stenographer must do all the work alone as no technology is used here. The Stenographer is someone who transcribes the words spoken by the official and types them on a computer or steno machine. Stenographers must be licensed or pursue certification and pass the examination to work as a stenographer. Stenographers use sign language or particular codes for each word and letter that stenographers can only decipher. The signs are called strokes.

Job Responsibilities of a Stenographer

  • A Stenographer’s primary duty is to translate a language into a coded form known as shorthand.
  • A stenographer is also responsible for creating written records of live events.
  • A Stenographer has to attend to the phone calls of their officer, write down the dictations, and translate them. 
  • Stenographers arrange meetings and collect information for supervisors.
  • A Stenographer also transcribes the typed materials accurately into a common language.

Career Scope of a Stenographer

     Once a candidate completes a certificate/diploma in Stenography, many career options exist. Stenographers are highly required in secretarial departments of various government and private offices. Handwork and dedication of a stenographer can lead to higher posts like Personal Assistant and Private Secretary, which are considered Gazetted posts.

Salary/Income of a Stenographer

     Stenographer grade pay is Rs. 2400, and the basic pay is between Rs.5200 to Rs. 20,200 in addition to permissible allowances by the Central Govt. Per the 7th Pay Commission, there are also many allowances and benefits that Stenographer receives.

Enroll for a Certificate/Diploma Course in Typing and Shorthand   
  • To become a STENOGRAPHER, a candidate should hold a certificate or diploma in Typing and Shorthand.
  • Candidate must be admitted into the Certificate/Diploma course in Typing and Shorthand course at Industrial Training Institutions (ITI) or some private institutions.
  • The course duration may be from 1 year to 1 and a half years. 

 

 

Register and Qualify for SSC Exam conducted by Central Government   
  • To become a STENOGRAPHER, Candidate has to register and qualify SSC-Written Computer-Based Test (CBT).
  • The candidate should be between 18 to 27 years of age on the first day of the month in which the course starts. 
  • SSC (Staff Selection Commission) Exam is conducted annually by SSC (Staff Selection Commission) in June/July. (* Dates of the exam can be varied as per releasing date of the advertisement)
  • The candidate should be between 21 to 30 years of age, on the first day of the month the course starts. However, the upper age limit will be relaxed by three years for OBC candidates and five years for SC/ST candidates.

Qualify for Skill Test in Stenography   
  • The candidates who qualify for the CBT will be called for the skill test. 
  • The candidates must appear for one dictation for 10 minutes, either in Hindi or English, at the speed of 100 and 80 words per minute.
  • The Stenographer Skill test will be conducted at the Commission’s Regional/ Sub-regional offices or the  Exam center.
  • After the skill test, a merit list of qualified candidates is prepared for document verification and medical examination.
Go for the Document Verification and Medical Test (Stenographer)   
  • The candidates who qualify in the CBT exam and Skilled Test are now eligible to appear for Document Verification and Medical Tests. However, all candidates must prepare for the CBT exam and Skilled Test to qualify for the final Document Verification round and a medical test, based on which the final merit list will be issued. 
  • The candidate must bring the original documents and photocopies with the same information submitted during the SSC Application Process. The merit list is based on the marks scored by candidates in SSC- CBT exam and Skilled Test, Document Verification, and medical test. The final selection of candidates will be made based on this merit list.
